Hey hey, major breakthrough!

I found out that the significant environmental property seems to be not
CPU architecture, but locale!

I normally use the locale "en_GB.UTF-8".  But if I set LC_ALL to "C", then theme switching suddenly
works.

Please check if you can reproduce the problem on your end by setting
LC_ALL to "en_GB.UTF-8".
