i have found a workaround to the problem:

downgrade libgtk2.0-0 from the candidate 2.11.6-1ubuntu3 to
2.10.11-0ubuntu3, and restart Opera.

wget http://ubuntu.dlf.ge/ubuntu/pool/main/g/gtk+2.0/libgtk2.0-0_2.10.11-0ubuntu3_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i libgtk2.0-0_2.10.11-0ubuntu3_i386.deb

different architecture builds can be found here:
http://ubuntu.dlf.ge/ubuntu/pool/main/g/gtk+2.0/ and many other
repositories.

this workaround also fixes the bug with OpenOffice application crashing
on start.
