Actually I think that it may have been a filesystem corruption. Could you check
what /var/lib/dpkg/updates/0012 contains? I have had some python scripts end up
in there on an ext4 filesystem before. The error message is similar, and
/var/lib/dpkg/updates/* are actually dpkg's journal files of what still needs to
be done to dpkg's database, if I am not mistaken.
