Trouble with Tomcat

Hello,
I'm writing to report some problems installing the tomcat5.5 package
for ubuntu. After installing, I am unable to start tomcat.
 - First, it reports errors with file permissions: it cannot write to
the logs directory
 - Once this is fixed it will start, but nothing shows up on localhost:8080
 - Replacing the server.xml file with the one in examples improves
this (sort of): localhost:8080 then shows an error report for a
file-not-found exception.
At this point I got stuck.
