Duplicate logging?

daemon.log - is logs for all daemons running like cron daemon for example.
it records any information about daemons etc.
debug.log - not sure what that does
dmesg - is a list of messages that are posted during start up that scroll
by so quickly
kern.log - is where any kernel messages are displayed
messages - dunno
syslog - any system messages are logged
user.log - logs any successful as well as unsuccessful user login attempts.
to be honest im not sure why so much duplication.
