** Description changed:
- In Banshee, when I transfer a podcast to my iPod classic (6th
- generation) it won't show up under the main menu's 'Podcasts' button. If
- I click on the button nothing happens but the preview-pane on the right
- side of the menu does show that there is a certain number of podcasts
- available (though this number doesn't seem to match with the actual
- amount of podcasts on the device). To find my podcasts I have to
- navigate to 'Music > Genres > Podcast'.
+ In Banshee, when I transfer a podcast to my iPod Nano (3rd generation)
+ it won't show up under the main menu's 'Podcasts' button. If I click on
+ the button nothing happens but the preview-pane on the right side of the
+ menu does show that there is a certain number of podcasts available
+ (though this number doesn't seem to match with the actual amount of
+ podcasts on the device). To find my podcasts I have to navigate to
+ 'Music > Genres > Podcast'.
This bug has been reported in 2007
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/banshee/+bug/140489) and says
to be fixed, but it obviously isn't fixed.
I'm on Ubuntu 12.04.2 64bit with Banshee 2.4.1-3ubuntu1~precise2.
+
+ *** Update
+
+ I used iTunes on Windows to reset my iPod to its factory settings. I
+ then uploaded music and podcasts to the iPod but both showed weird
+ behavior. The Podcasts again don't show up under the Podcast menu in my
+ iPod, but I also couldn't get them to play via the Music menu (podcasts
+ stayed at 0:00) while the music did play. Both the music and podcasts
+ weren't shown though in Banshee so I couldn't delete them.
+
+ Connecting the iPod to another laptop with Ubuntu 12.04 32bit (lets call
+ this laptop B) and the same version of Banshee (Banshee
+ 2.4.1-3ubuntu1~precise2) did show the music and podcasts. Adding new
+ podcasts on laptop B also fixed my original problem of not seeing them
+ under the Podcasts menu. After this, on laptop A Banshee recognized the
+ music as normal again though the podcast was now indexed in the Music
+ playlist instead of the Podcast playlist. Newly uploaded podcasts again
+ don't show up under the iPod's Podcast menu.
+
+ To recap: Everything works fine on laptop B, though not on laptop A. One
+ explanation I can think of is that I reset the iPod using iTunes on the
+ Windows partition of laptop B and maybe the iPod only 'likes' being
+ altered using laptop B. The idea that my iPod might be picky about its
+ laptop is fueled by sentences from its manual like "If you’re using iPod
+ nano with a Mac and you want to use it with a Windows PC, you must
+ restore the iPod software for use with the PC" and "You cannot switch
+ from using iPod nano with a Mac to using it with a Windows PC without
+ erasing all data on iPod nano". I don't know much about Apple stuff
+ though. As a further test I might do a reset on laptop A to see if my
+ theory is right.
