In Banshee 2.0,  go to Edit -> Preferences.  In the Extensions tab,
almost at the bottom of the list, there is a "Notification Area Icon"
which is not enabled by default.  Enabling this does the trick (at least
for Ubuntu 10.10; haven't tried it on 11.04, but it should work also).
