The developer responsible for the Genre feature has been through a
change of jobs and moving to a different country and has been
unavailable for some time. However he has started working on Banshee
again recently, while this bug is high on his personal todo list there
is a mount of bug reports needing attention from him.

If Ubuntu feels the need to ship something, there is a genre browser
patch, but Alex seems to have plans for something more. You can always
ship the few lines of code if Alex doesn't find time to finish the
feature the way he wants.

Title:
  Add genre filter pane

Status in Banshee Music Player:
  In Progress
Status in “banshee” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: banshee

Using:
Banshe 1.6 Beta 2 (1.5.1)
Ubuntu 9.10

This is definately a feature request: a genre filter pane.
The preferences window should allow the user to select the panes he wants to be visible. The options would be: Artist, Album, and Genre. Yes, I know we can use the genre: tag in the search field, but this option is in other players (Rhythmbox, iTunes and Songbird come to mind) and is very useful for creating "on-the-fly" playlist (when a user wants to hear to all the songs in a particular genre). Also, artist and album are not enough when the music library goes beyond a few hundreds of songs, and I'm pretty sure that several users fall in this category.

This bug has already been treated there, and even a patch has been developed, then there is no reason why this is not implemented already.

Included is a (not so good) mockup of what I'm talking about.
