I mentioned this upstream, but I'll add it here as well:

This feature has actually already been implemented in Banshee, but it
requires you to press "?" before you start typing the name, which makes
it much less convenient and almost completely undiscoverable. Hopefully
Banshee will eventually have the option to trigger this jump-to-song
(called type-ahead search) without the "?"

Title:
Artist column not searchable via desktop input

Status in Banshee Music Player:
  Unknown
Status in “banshee” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: banshee

This is a wishlist bug, I guess.

In most other media players, it's possible to search or scroll through the list of artists.
E.g. in Rythmbox you focus the artist column and type [R] and you go down to Radiohead. Then you enter [A] and [G] and you get to Rage Against The Machine.
Sadly there's no such behaviour in Banshee.

Would it be possible to implement that?
I know about the search bar but that's a totally different way.
