Sorry for double posting...

I've may found where the problem is:

I've disabled the coverflow plugin and now banshee doesn't freeze the
system while starting and doesn't go over 90MB of RAM even if playing a
song..so the problem was there

Title:
Banshee uses far too much RAM

Status in “banshee” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: banshee

I have a large collection of music ( > 60.000 Files). If I use Banshee, my RAM (about 550 MB of 4 GB used normally) boosts up until it is completely filled, then it tries to fill all my swap space and my system begins to hang and is not usable any more. I have to kill it then. Think about: Banshee uses more than 3 GB of RAM here! This is just a music player and not an operating system!
This problem exists in all versions of Banshee (since the very first version) and did not change yet. I like Banshee a lot, but I can not use it with my music collection. (I wonder for what purpose this program is intended if not for managing and playing large collections...?) You really should find a way how to handle large collections without overloading RAM - especially when using it as a default player in Ubuntu. Rhythmbox does have a similar problem, but system is still usable with it and a bit of RAM is still available.
