It is very unfortunate that you lost your notes.

In tomboy 0.15.6 the note directory changed from ~/.tomboy/ to
~/.local/share/tomboy/ to follow the XDG Base Directory Specification.
The directories are documented here:
http://live.gnome.org/Tomboy/Directories

When tomboy (or ubuntu) was upgraded, all notes were copied from .tomboy
to the new directory and, if I remember correctly, a special file or
note was created at the old location to inform the user of the directory
change. Do you have such a file in your backup? Maybe you backed up a
.tomboy directory after an upgrade because you said the old directory
had some notes in it?

Status in “tomboy” package in Ubuntu: Invalid

Bug description:
Binary package hint: tomboy

I recently did a fresh install and *thought* that I had made a backup of my notes, as I copied .tomboy which contained .note files. As I found out on my new install, notes are apparently kept at .local/share/tomboy, which means I have now lost 1.5 years worth of notes.

Needless to say, I'm less than happy, so I was wondering whether it would be a great idea to store all notes in .tomboy. I think that's a great idea, what do you think?
