I can confirm that this problem is fixed in the banshee-2.8.0 package on
Lucid in the banshee team PPA. I will test again if/when this version
hits the Maverick archive.

Binary package hint: banshee

On Ubuntu 10.10 beta, when I plug in my N900 I get the media player prompt and choose to open banshee. When it opens there is no source entry for the phone.
