I added this repository https://launchpad.net/~banshee-team/+archive/banshee-daily (says that it tracks daily builds from git - whatever that is). Now banshee doesn't show the number of songs in the library, and  the audiobook bug is still there. :-(
How do you make it work?

It should switch to the next track of the audiobook instead of playing the first one over and over again.
