I was just about to open a bug for this problem when I bump into this
report. As said by @EmmaJane, this happens when gnome-sessions is set to
restore the previously running applications.

This is still happening in 15.5 (karmic version, I hope apport-collect has attached all the necessary info).
I have attached the file generated by gnome-session (located in "~/.config/gnome-session/saved-session/").
