I connected it and got the failed to lock message, I ignored all popups etc and opened a terminal and typed the following

mike at desktop:~$ gvfs-mount -l
The program 'gvfs-mount' is currently not installed.  You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install gvfs-bin
bash: gvfs-mount: command not found
mike at desktop:~$
