Had a very similar issue upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy.

Sorry, couldn't start F-Spot

And deleting the f-spot folder (although never used it) did the trick.

(btw I only came across f-spot 'cos since the upgrade, my Nikon camera wasn't being automatically recognized anymore :S
but still got to get to the bottom of that)
