I had the same problem. I run Gutsy with all the latest updates. D-bus
is running and everything. But f-spot wouldn't start. No visual feedback
when started with the launcher, when I run it from the console I got
this:

dkrul at workplace:~$ f-spot
Initializing Mono.Addins
Starting new FSpot server

System.NullReferenceException: A null value was found where an object instance was required.

Can't get a connection to the dbus. Trying again...
Starting new FSpot server
Can't get a connection to the dbus. Trying again...
Starting new FSpot server
...and so on.. (loop)

I was able to fix this by deleting my f-spot folder (rm -rf
~/.gnome2/f-spot ). Fortunately I didn't have any data in the f-spot
database. I didn't investigate this further. Now it's running properly.

This probably only happens when dist-upgrading from feisty to gutsy.

I think it's a serious problem for someone upgrading to gutsy to find
that they can't start f-spot. F-spot is one of the most important
applications (since it's in the default ubuntu desktop), so stuff like
this shouldn't stop working after an upgrade. It's easy enough to fix,
but probably not for a novice user.
