I have the same problem, no fullscreen in f-spot with compiz enabled.
I found this on the command line when trying to close the "fullscreen":

(f-spot:8316): GdkPixbuf-WARNING **: GdkPixbufLoader finalized without
calling gdk_pixbuf_loader_close() - this is not allowed. You must
explicitly end the data stream to the loader before dropping the last
reference.

Not sure if this is any help, but at least now you all know it ;-)
