Note: I don't intend to reply to this thread much longer.

For years the default behaviour has been unpopular to users, including
yourself as documented in Debian Bug Tracker.

This patch is under review for inclusion upstream, but we felt it would
be nice to have it in before Dapper. There was absolutely zero lack of
consideration or collaboration between ourselves and upstream.

If you feel it is outside the jurisdiction of Ubuntu to patch software
to improve consistancy and ease of use, I am sure you can find something
more glaring in our Gnome desktop to find issue with.

Look for documentation on the gconf key in the next upload. Thanks for
the tip.
