I have the same behaviour running gnome on edgy, both on PPC and i386.
Using the panel applet works fine.

Maybe an icon is missing somewhere ?
I straced it and have not found anything in the trace, all references to "png" correspond to the lookup for libpng. It does not seems to try to load its icon at all !
