You can still set Beagle up to index DOC files using the "external" filter combined with wvWare, antiword or abiword. It just won't work "out of the box". See <http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gnome.dashboard.devel/2972> for instructions about this.

It might be useful if we ship an example external-filters.xml file which shows how to have Beagle index Microsoft Word and WordPerfect files.
