Rsync IO errors

Hello,

I am seeing the occasional error in our mirror's rsync output:

IO error encountered -- skipping file deletion

We've been getting these for months now, but recently a user has
reported that a scheduled update apparently removed around 350
packages from his system, and he was wondering if this was the result
of a mismanaged or damaged mirror.

I am syncing from rsync://us.rsync.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu

Has anyone else seen this rsync IO error, and what does it mean for
the users of this mirror?
