BTW, the start-up crashers had been reported in bug #162657.

My "clean up for -root and -fullscreen" patch was accepted as-is in
Debian, xaos 3.2-8. I have also submitted the two (rather trivial)
remaining patches upstream and to Debian, so I will not make a new merge
before I see if those patches get accepted there within reasonable time.
So please don't let this hold back any upload.
