You can also check http://sourceforge.net to see what apps fits to your 
background knowledge. You can search based on category and than search 
based on programming language. Pick one out, learn from the examples, 
rewrite your own version if needed or otherwise help develop the 
applications and show your professor what you did, why you did it, how 
you organized it, concept etc. etc. etc...
