I agree face to face is not only important for mentoring but also for
contributors who work in teams in general. I currently mentor a dozen
contributors in Mozilla distributed across the globe some staff and some
community. But I probably see my mentees a few times a year in person
whether I travel to them or they travel to me.

One thing we use to fill the gap is communication and mentoring tooling we
have an entire dashboard that helps mentors track mentees activity to make
sure they are successful in their contributions. Here is a screenshot of

Also open source and forkable ^ :)
