How should we handle setup/set-up, plugin/plug-in and login/log-in?
For instance, which of these three sentences would be more correct?
* "I am going to login to the box."
* "I am going to log-in to the box."
* "I am going to log into the box."
In this context (that of a verb), I would use the third version. Here are the
results from three major English dictionaries:
* Oxford has neither the compound nor hyphenated versions. I believe that they
would have us use them as separate words (i.e. "set up", "plug in" and "log
in").
* Cambridge has both "plugin" and "plug-in", as well as "set-up", but only as
nouns.
* Chambers has "set-up", but only as a noun.
Based on this information, I think we should use hyphenated versions
(e.g. "log-in") for nouns and separate words (e.g. "log in") for verbs.
