The above suggestion works for most parts. But if you try to do that on
firefox it does not (we all use gmail, don't we). Probably there are other
programs that have problem with the default IM in ubuntu.
A way around is to use SCIM. To do that one has to install the language
support for Amharic in System->language support. After installation you will
find SCIM in system->administration menu.

There is one more tweak one has to do to get the best result. That is
installing KMFL http://kmfl.sourceforge.net/ with one of the sera keyman
keyboards in SCIM. If you have been using keyman with the sera EZ+ or EZ+i
you know what I am talking about.

At last when the language support for Amharic is installed one can also log
in to an Amharic ubuntu by changing the language option on the login screen.
That means you will get the user interface, help, and every thing else in
Amharic!!!:-) Well not exactly. We are hopping that would the case. But from
what is accomplished till now we can close our eyes and imagine how it would
be.

Try it. I promise you will love it. And you might get motivated to put some
extra time in to the translation work. By the way every thing we translated
in rosetta or home automatically updates the Amharic environment. You
already know that.
