MySQL Issue

Hi Everyone,

I trust you have all been keeping well, it has been a while since I 
received any form of correspondence using this mailing list. anyway I 
have an issue with my ubuntu machine, I am using 10.04 during a routing 
update of my Repo.'s I my MySQL-Server 5.1 hung on install. I eventually 
had to killall dpkg since then I have not been able to run, reinstall 
Mysql, I run:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
  then completely removed all packages displayed including "MySQL" then 
tried to run a fresh install, during the install I receive and error:
"cannot create root password, root already has a password" then it hung 
again,
when I run "mysql" using command I get:
"ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket 
'/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)"
Please help
