Switching mic in to line out

Hi people
I would like to use the mic in port with my speakers (i.e switch it to
be line out). The middle default line out port is somewhat damaged
(Confirmed even in windows xp). Damaged as in it manages low volume
even at maximum on both OSs (Ubuntu 8.04 & XP). However when i use the
realtek HD audio panel on XP to set the mic in (pink) port to line
out, i get awesome sound. Was wondering if the same could be done from
ubuntu. Any assist will greatly be appreciated.
Regards
Chris
