MySQL Trouble need help

Hi all,

I hope you have been well, I resently attempted to upgrade Mysql server. The
server is now giving me issues, I believe the root of the problem is the
my.cnf is a  different version than the server itself.

When I attempt to login i.e.
#mysql -u root -p
etc
I receive the following error message:
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket
'/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)

Can anyone help me
