Thanks Tony,

I'll have to wait for late in the night to download 200mb worth of updates. Meanwhile I've got to find a way of making my modem work. I'm following the threads on Ubuntu forums about the Huawei E220 on Linux. Hope it works before night fall. Alternatively, is there a way of downloading updates on windows then load them to the linux?

Hi Kagwe,

Good to see you got things working.  My main machine is still on 7.10
- so nothing wrong with that!

The *server* CD comes with those packages on it - I don't think they
are on the desktop CD.

Once you have installed the base system from CD, it's best to put it
away - it's WAAAAY out of date.  What you need to do now is connect to
internet, and do new package installs and updates online.  Be warned -
just updating the system will be about 200MB of download - plus the
new packages you wish to install.

You can use the graphical tool 'synaptic' to do this.  Otherwise, the
preferred command tool is 'aptitude', which is an improved 'apt-get'
(better handling of dependencies)

For the command line, you should therefore:
>sudo aptitude update
>sudo aptitude upgrade
and then:
sudo aptitude install mysql-server
etc.
