ubuntu9.04をUSBメモリにインストールして普通に使っています。

書いていただいた英文から理解すると、インストールCDが汚れて
いたり傷ついていたり、またはUSBメモリの動作不良の可能性が
あるとのことです。

ubuntu9.04でもよろしければ、新たに焼いてUSBメモリをubuntuの
インストーラでext4でフォーマットして試していただくのはいかが
ですか？
ちなみにUSBメモリは4GB程度だとOS入れた後に必要なものを
インストールすると空き領域がほとんどないので８GB以上を
オススメします。
