Kubuntu

Subject: Knot 3 released
Welcome to Edgy Eft Knot 3, which will in time become Ubuntu 6.10.
Pre-releases of Edgy are *not* encouraged for anyone needing a stable
system or who is not comfortable running into occasional, even
frequent breakage. They are however recommended for Ubuntu developers
and those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs.
Knot 3 is the third in a series of milestone CD images that will be
released throughout the Edgy development cycle, as images that are
known to be reasonably free of showstopper CD-build or installer bugs,
while representing very current snapshots of Edgy. You can download
it here, for Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu and Xubuntu respectively:

The primary changes from Knot 2 have been finalising of feature goals
and bugfixing. The current state of features targetted for Edgy is at
https://features.launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/edgy/+specs . Common to
all variants, we have changed the init system from the venerable
sysvinit to upstart which is an event-driven init script system. In
addition, all derivatives have new artwork, both for usplash as well
as for login managers and default backgrounds. The keyboard layout
handling on the console has been changed to use X keymaps.
In Ubuntu, GNOME has been updated to 2.16.0 (previous version was
2.16.0 Release Candidate 1). Other notable changes are listed on
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/knot3 .
In Kubuntu, Konversation 1.0 has been included, as well as other new
versions of KDE components. More changes are listed on
http://wiki.kubuntu.org/EdgyEft/Knot3/Kubuntu .
For Xubuntu, the XFce core applications have been upgraded to 4.4
release candidate 1.
Since this is a prerelease set of images, you can expect some
bugs. Among them are the following (so there is no need to report
these if you encounter them):
* The desktop CD installer does not guess non-US keyboard layouts
correctly. This merely requires one to select the correct
keyboard layout when using the desktop CD installer.
* Mono on the desktop CD has problems due to an unfortunate
interaction between it and the live CD framework. The same
problem makes the "translate this application" menu item not work.
If you're interested in following the changes as we further develop
Edgy, have a look at the edgy-changes list:
http://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/edgy-changes
We also suggest that you subscribe to the ubuntu-devel-announce
mailing list if you're interested in following Ubuntu
development. This is a low-traffic list (a few posts a week) carrying
announcements of approved specifications, policy changes, alpha
releases, and other interesting events.

The Testing area of the wiki suggests various tests that can be
performed on Knot CD releases, to try to catch bugs as soon as
possible so they can be fixed:

Bug reports should go to Malone:
