Grazie mille per l'attenzione Franco!
Ho provato a dare il comando che mi hai consigliato e il risultato è
stato:

Uninitialised file found, configuring.
Using /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Saved back-up to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.fglrx-2

Dopodichè ho provato a riavviare, ma nessuno dei due problemi si è
risolto purtroppo :-(
Allego nuovamente il file xorg.conf nel caso qualcosa di importante sia
cambiato...
