Per curiosita' sono andato a controllare un pc in ufficio con ubuntu e
wifi.
Ho notato che lo strumento "rete" di Hoary quando setta il file
interfaces ommette la riga
wireless-mode managed

Puoi fare anche questa prova se vuoi.
Inoltre se dai:

ifup ra0

si attiva? In caso negativo prova 
ifup eth1=ra0

fammi sapere...sono curioso.
