The #off-topic channel exists for exactly this kind of thing, as long as the 
discussion isn't indecent/against the law (which would have no place anywhere 
on Freenode) then feel free to point people there. The channel isn't official 
or anything like that, it just serves as a useful place to handball people 
to.
