I sorted this out by private mail, but didn't notice that there was a
copy on the list.  For the record, the answer was as follows:

That's a more difficult solution to your problem than you need.
Instead, you can stop ubuntu-standard being installed using preseeding.
Put this line in your preseed file:

  tasksel tasksel/skip-tasks string standard
