This happens when the kernel fails to detect your CD drive.

Try the desktop CD. If the desktop CD also fails to work (if it fails,
it'll fail in a rather different way, but nevertheless early on), then
the problem is that your CD drive is simply unsupported. If it works,
then the problem is that the kernel isn't delivering the right modules
to the alternate installer.

In either case, file a bug on
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+filebug, explain the
problem and the result of the test above, and quote the output of 'lspci
-vvnn' from the console on Alt-F2 on the alternate CD.
