A power failure while filesystem writes are going on can corrupt it, though machines should be less prone to this with a journalling filesystem. What filesystem was being used? It is also in general a bad idea to run fsck, and blindly answer 'y' to all prompts. At this point, I think that you will need to reinstall the system. If /home was on a different partition, it might still be recoverable.
