But this time after rezipping the bn.wl file to make bn.cwl, and then doing the usual steps (configure, make, sudo make install), the spellchecker would no longer allow me to set the language as Bengali.

There are variations which are bound to occur based on personal
preference. For example in Hindi, some write हजार while others use हज़ार;
some use गजब, and other ग़ज़ब. And in personal writing, if someone prefers
to include one of these varieties in their spellchecker and exclude the
other variety, then that is really a matter of personal preference and
would not I should think, warrant sending these myriads of personal
preference patchsets upstream. If a spellchecker word list is to be
widely distributed that is one thing; but for use in one's home such
personal preferences abound, and are probably I should think, best
accepted as something which is simply always going to exist on the
personal level.

All the Best,
Swarup
