What kind of projector do you have.

*First ,* a not so nice option, is to start up the computer with the
projector on, this "helps" the computer adjust to the projector screen.

*Second - *Another option is to cycle through the various laptop screen -
projector combinations as in (usually this is a function key (f7 in
thinkpads)
1st Option - Computer Screen only
2nd option - Computer and projector Screen simultaneously
3rd Option - Projector Screen Only.

This cycling sometimes helps the the computer adjust to the option available

*Third - *most projectors have an auto adjust feature - once connected try
and use this .
