Thanks Pratik and Deepak for your replies.

I shall try the gnome shell option again --there was an option at
installation time for gnome shell or unity and i had opted to go for
the default since i figured that those problems would have been
debugged in the 11.04/11.10 series.

I have both the 10.04 and 12.04 on 2 different laptops and 10.04 works
much faster on the earlier laptop.
