sudo use apt-get install "name of software" in your terminal

before that you may need to run apt-get update to refresh the list of
software so that the updates are know

why don't you want to use an update manager, is it a software thats
not part of the official repositories, in that case you may need to
uninstall the old version and reinstall the new version.

last - if you explain the problem better it may be possible to provide
you with a workable solution rather than flinging ideas in the
relative dark.
