Since your HD is kind of allready bad hy not first replace it ith a
new HD and get that going
Then get your bad a HD into a external HD casing it ill make it easier
to work with

However if you must back up using a live CD then you will any way need
a back up disk (HD)

Use Testdisk this is a really good tool (and i think it will be
there on the live CD , if you choose that method)
Attach the HD you want to recover
Following the set of questions it asks
1. Create Log File (Create, Append, No)
2. Select which media you want to (make sure your "to be recovered"
media is separate from your where to be saved media)
3. Choose partition table type (intel, mac etc)
4. Choose hat you want to run (Analyse is what you want for no - you
can try all the others *very very carefully and if you know what you
are doing)
5. It will list all your existing partitions -
6. It will ask what you want to do (quick search / backup) - normally
first try quick search - this is to locate which partitions it can
actually perform its work on
7. It will ask if the partitions were created under Vista (say Y if not sure)
8. It will show a list of partitions which you can search in so select
the partition you have your windows on and Look at the options at the
bottom - from there select P (to list files deleted and those in
existence) this will list all your folders and files
Here you have an option of c for copying here it will ask you where
you want to copy the data - you must select a location that is either
on a separate partition or on a separate HD (thumb drives will do to)
This should allow you to copy what ever is reasonably possible.
