Ubuntu is such a neat, user friendly and pleasant  flavor of linux operating
system. The ubuntu team has made sure that you are able to use it as a
complete desktop.  Ever  wondered why ubuntu does not come with the codecs
and players which support playing all kinds of multimedia that would want
to?  Specially when multimedia is such a integral part of a desktop system.
The answer to that question is a lot of multimedia comes in a proprietary
or “non free” formats and Ubuntu is committed to include only libre software
by default.  Examples of non-free formats would be  mp3, wma, wmv, mpeg-4
and so on.  More over, licensing policies vary from country to country,
which makes it difficult to add all these packages in the global Ubuntu
distro.

Good news is,  Ubuntu can  still play  your favorite proprietary media
formats provided you install additional software such as vlc, gxine, mplayer
etc. To achieve this, you’ll need to install
ubuntu-restricted-extras<https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats>and
add Medibuntu
<http://medibuntu.org/> repository  and install the necessary packages.
