saw what the others have already written like df -h and maybe dot files

Adding to that
1) do you have an indexing software that works automatically - if so
its cache sometimes become pretty big esp if external disks are added
(if you had set it up that way)
2) similarly some photo manager which caches thumbnails

did you use Baobab (Applications - Accessories - disk Usage analyser)
it may not be command line but its provides super views of where space
is going.
