NFS consists of both kernelspace and userspace components. The NFS
support compiled into the kernel enables NFS support and in the kernel
and nothing else. In order to use it one is required to install the
user space _applications_  (rpc.mountd, portmap) for it to actually do
anything useful. On Ubuntu you can install them using apt-get.
