Blender is an open source 3d modeling and animation software.

Sintel and previous short films are created using mostly open source
software. Through the DVD sales they raise money. Also while animation
artists work on creating the movie, the programmers work on improving
the blender software as per the requirement of moving. And one of the
most important goal of these short films is to showcase the features
of blender.
