dear friends,

i have been using Ubuntu for the past 3 years. now, am facing this strange
problem with Ubuntu 10.04. i have a 500GB external hard drive. when i plug
in the drive to my laptop, it first gets mounted as usb1, istead of it's
name (the name of the drive is Durga and it used to be mounted as Durga a
few months back). But I can see the name and icon Durga on the PLACES list,
just below COMPUTER. But when i click on it nothing happens. Moreover,
this mounted usb1 doesnt give me the right to read-write, i cannot cut,
paste, rename files there. It says, i am not the root mentioned in fstab.
i found an indirect fix. using terminal and gksudo nautilus, I use this
with the rights. and if i unmount the usb1 using gksudo nautilus and come
back to the other user and click on the DURGA icon on the PLACES, THEN IT
GETS MOUNTED AS IT IS UNDER THE LABEL DURGA WITH ALL THE RIGHTS.

why this is happening? is there a permanent fix? i tried to change the
rights using gksudo nautilus, still it says the permission is denied as i am
not the root. i hope i have explained my problem well enough.

thanks,
jinoy
