No. The router is also working as switch, i.e. it creates a logical
path between the two network ports between which data is transferred
(compare this with a hub, which broadcasts data packets and all
systems receive it).

This is probably due to a low quality router/switch. I have a similar
setup at home and do not see a perceptible change in internet speeds
while copying. If you are copying very large files, it would be best
to use wired interfaces rather than copying over wireless (speeds will
be at least 2-3x better).
